The IP rating or Ingress protection rating means how safe a product is from the ingress of solid object particles and moisture. The first number of the rating is how high the product is rated for solid object particles such as dust and the second number is how high the product is rated against moisture.
For example a product that is IP68 rated, would mean the product is rated 6 for solid object particles meaning this is dust tight, protected from total dust ingress and rated 8 for moisture, meaning this is watertight against the effects of immersion in water at at least 1m under pressure for up to 30 mins.
What is the difference between the IP Ratings?

What is the Difference between IP65 & IP67?
Both IP65 and IP67 rated products are ideal for use outdoors and both offer the same level of high protection against dust ingress. The difference between these is the protection they provide against water ingress.
- IP65 rated product provides protection from low pressure jest of water from any direction.
- IP67 rated product provides greater protection against water ingress – such as being able to be immersed in water between 15cm and 1m for 30 minutes
What is the Difference between IP67 & IP68?
Both IP67 and IP68 rated products are ideal for use outdoors and both offer the same level of high protection against dust ingress. The difference between these is the protection they provide against water ingress.
- IP67 rated product provides protection against water ingress – such as being able to be immersed in water between 15cm and 1m for 30 minutes
- IP68 rated product provides greater protection against water ingress – such as being able to be immersed in water at 1m for up to 30 minutes
What has better protection against water IP64 or IP56?
When it comes to knowing what product has the better protection against water ingress you need to look at the second number. The higher this number the better protection the product has against water ingress. So IP56 will have better protection than an IP64 against water ingress.
- IP56 Rated – Protected against powerful jets of water, limited ingress permitted
- IP64 Rated – Protected against jets of water, limited ingress permitted
What does IPX4 rated mean?
IPX4 rating means that the product has no protection against dust ingress and has limited protection against water ingress. An IPX4 rated product will protect against water splashes from all directions, limited ingress permitted.
