LOT 20 Compliant – Electrical Heating

Heating and Ventilation

What is Lot 20?

Lot 20 Compliant is an EU regulation that means that all local space heaters sold within the EU must meet a certain level of efficiency. This regulation came into effect on 1 January 2018. Local space heaters are defined as “as appliances that provide heat to indoor spaces by generating heat at the same location as it is needed”. It covers more than just electric radiators. The actual quote from the EU regulation is

“All local space heaters manufactured for sale in the EU after 1st January 2018 which use electricity, gaseous or liquid fuels, must comply with a minimum efficiency standard. This includes electric radiators, electric underfloor heating and electric and gas fires.”

We sell a lot of electric heating products here at Juice Electrical Supplies, and we are proud that all of them meet Lot 20 Compliant regulations:

How does it ensure efficiency?

This new regulation will ensure efficiency by ensuring that all heaters sold in the EU come with intelligent room temperature controls to minimise wasted energy. Intelligent room temperature controls make it so that your heater will not use up electricity unnecessarily. It includes a number of features:

  • 24/7 timer control (optional smartphone WiFi control).
  • Accurate thermostat to measure temperature and offer precise control.
  • Open window tech to make sure that electricity isn’t wasted heating a room with a window open.

Electric radiators, infrared heaters and panel heaters that output at least 250W all need to reach 38% energy efficiency to be compliant. Smaller and portable heaters will have different energy efficiency requirements.

Why Was it Introduced?

Inefficient heating is both a waste of money for homeowners and does unnecessary damage to the environment. The EU Commission decided that electrical heating had room for improvement when it came to efficiency. Heating is a larger part of the energy we use to heat our homes. In a government survey, 30% of UK homeowners were worried about their heating bills, so it’s no surprise that energy efficiency is something to be strived for.

Conclusion

The drive towards energy efficiency can only be a good thing. Forcing companies to comply with this will spur them on to develop the technology and make energy efficiency heaters cheaper. What this means for you is that the market will now only have energy-efficient heaters. So whatever you buy, it will ensure that you are making the most of your energy.
